- Can you tell us something about yourself?

A quick answer as I am about to meet a friend at the village pub …I love Italian food and positive people.

-When did you discover your passion for art?

When I was five , I remember loving drawing a Viking ship . By the time I was eight I painted my first oil painting , and I was hooked. I remember the paint remained wet and it was a challenge ( which I enjoyed). It was the first time I consciously became aware of the characteristics of a material.

- How do you create your works? (referring to the installations)

It starts with an idea that is usually from a good memory, experience or feeling. I believe good things in life are much more important to express and I am bored of seeing 'down' art. The installation process is a method for me to recreate the idea into another format. Often an installation will inspire stories of its own; its a bit like the game of 'Chinese Whispers'. It allows one to enjoy other people's art without needing to know anything about them.

- What are your main sources of inspirations?

It sounds cliché, but everything is a source of inspiration. I believe in both Science (cause and effect) as well as the Buddhist concept of Karma.

- What do you want to transmit with your art to people?

I am fifty years old. I feel that I have barely started. I am very excited by art because I have just discovered that the subject matter that inspires me has been with me all my life. I am less self-conscious and I can be more honest. Time is precious. The scientist David Bohn described reality as “Unbroken wholeness in flowing movement”. This is so true; and I want to describe both this and other ideas through my art.

- Ci puoi raccontare qualcosa su di te?

Una risposta veloce perché sto per incontrare un amico al “village pub”.. amo il cibo italiano e le persone ottimiste.

- Quando hai scoperto la tua passione per l’arte?

Quando avevo cinque anni mi ricordo che mi piacevano i disegni di una barca vichinga. All’età di otto anni creai il mio primo dipinto ad olio, e ne rimasi innamorato. Mi ricordo che il dipinto non si asciugava, è stata una sfida che ho apprezzato molto. È stata la prima volta che presi coscienza delle caratteristiche di un materiale.

- Come crei i tuoi lavori? (con riferimento alle istallazioni)

Il tutto inizia con un’idea che deriva di solito da un ricordo piacevole, o un’esperienza o una sensazione. Credo che le cose positive della vita siano molto più importanti da esprimere. Sono annoiato dall’arte negativa e pessimista. L’istallazione per me è un modo per rappresentare l’idea in un diverso formato. Spesso un’istallazione ispira storie di suo, un po’ come il gioco “Telefono Senzafili”. Permette agli osservatori di apprezzare l’arte di qualcuno senza sapere niente di quella persona.

- Quali sono le tue principali fonti d’ispirazione?

Sembrerà scontato, ma tutto è una fonte d’ispirazione. Credo sia nella Scienza (causa-effetto), come nel concetto Buddista del Karma.

- Cosa vuoi rappresentare con la tua arte?

Ho cinquant’anni. Mi sento come se avessi appena iniziato. Sono molto emozionato dall’arte perché ho da poco scoperto che l’argomento che mi affascina ed è fonte per me di ispirazione è stato con me tutta la vita. Sono meno cosciente di me stesso e posso invece essere più onesto. Il tempo è prezioso. Lo scienziato David Bohn ha descritto la realtà come “intatta totalità in fluente movimento”. Questo è completamene vero e io attraverso la mia arte voglio rappresentare questa e altre idee.

Bill Viola is a contemporary video artist, born in 1951 in the United States. He is one of the leading figures of New Media artists. He works with videos, sounds and image technology. He creates videotapes, architectural video installations, sound environments, electronic music performances and works for television broadcast. His works focus mainly on the idea behind human experiences, such as birth, death, emotions and consciousness. He was the first who mixed video art with formal perfection and modernity with Renaissance and Oriental tradition.

Bill Viola è un esponente della video art, nato  nel 1951 negli Stati Uniti.  È una delle figure principali tra gli artistic he utilizzano I New Media. Bill lavora con video, suoni, e la tecnologia delle immagini. Crea filmati, istallazioni video, suoni d’ambiente, performance di musica eletronica e lavori per la televisione. Hi everyone! Today, I feel the summer gets closer! I start dreaming of the sea, shores and sun. Being in Milan with all this gray it’s quite sad;). So, I’ve just found an artist who perfectly suited for this situation! Her name is Karine Laval and she is a French photographer, who lives and works in New York City.

- Can you tell us something about yourself? When did you discover your passion for photography?

I have been based in New York since 1997 and have shared my time between the United States and Europe, working on personal projects and editorial assignments. I've been fascinated by photography since I was a child. My grandparents used to live in a town near Paris where the first museum dedicated to photography was open in France. They took me there as a young child and I remember being fascinated by the old cameras on display and daguerreotypes and photographs exhibited, which intrigued me and were to me like a travel into time. My grandparents also happened to own a restaurant where Daguerre developed his first photographs... My grandfather offered me his old camera (a Kodak Retina, which I still have) when I was 10 or 12. I started to use it as "a spy", photographing the neighbours and our immediate surroundings without their knowing... Only when I moved to New York did I take photography seriously when I met other photographers and realized it was possible to make a living out of art or photography. I always believed in following one's dreams so I quite my job and pursued my passion for photography.

- How was the idea of the pool born?

The core of my work focuses on the notion of space, time and memory and the relationship we entertain with the environment in which we live. Ever since I was a child, I have been in love with water and I started to work on the Pool project in 2002 while on vacation in Barcelona. I went to the public swimming pool in Barcelonetta and decided to continue the project photographing public swimming pools throughout Europe. Through travelling to familiar and unknown vacation places over the course of a few years, I explored again the memories of my childhood by capturing the playful and sensual relationship one has to water and heat, and the exhilaration these moments of leisure give rise to. Beyond my personal memory it’s also a collective memory I am trying to reveal through the common and universal experience of leisure and bathing. Swimming pools are interesting to me for they represent a dominant theme of modern life in our culture. They also mix the natural element of water with the cultural and social element of manmade spaces where people can escape from everyday life and seem liberated from any social reference. Although the activities and expressions of the bathers are familiar and spontaneous, the scenes often appear composed by a silent choreographer when moments are isolated and frozen within the frame of the camera.- What are your main sources of inspirations?

I find inspiration in everyday life, simple moments, nature, people I meet and I love, music, art and painting. I sometimes feel that I use the camera more like a paint brush and like to use photography to explore our surrounding world in new and surprising ways which question our sense of perception and reality. I think my pictures have often a surreal or dreamlike feeling to them.

- What is the work that you are more attached? Why?

It's a hard question to answer as I feel each of my body of work is a part of me or of my life. And there are even a lot of images or series I haven't disclosed to the public yet, which I feel very attached to. The Pool series is definitely an important body of work as I traveled extensively for it and pursued it for several years. I happened to start a new series of swimming pools this year called "Poolscapes", shot in Los Angeles. This time I focus on private swimming pools but I am less interested in the social and mundane activities revolving around them. The pool and surface of the water becomes a metaphor or a mirror disclosing what's beyond the frame of the camera. The main subject - revealed through reflections, creates a fleeting and dreamy - almost surreal - sense of perception. It's also the first time I'm doing a personal project in the United States, which has been my home for 13 years. Ciao a tutti! Oggi sento che l’estate si sta avvicinando! Ho iniziato a sognare il mare, le spiagge e il sole.  Stare a Milano con tutto questo grigio è abbastanza triste;). Così, ho appena trovato un artista perfetto per una situazione come questa! Si chiama Karine Laval ed è una fotografa francese, che vive e lavora a New York.

- Puoi raccontarci qualcosa su di te? Quando hai scoperto la tua passione per la fotografia?

Mi sono stabilita a NY nel 1997 e da allora ho diviso il mio tempo tra gli Stati Uniti e l’Europa., lavorando sia su progetti personali che su commissione. Fin da bambina sono stata affascinata dalla fotografia. I miei nonni abitavano in una cittadina vicino a Parigi in cui fu aperto il primo museo di fotografia della Francia. Mi portarono quando ero bambina e mi ricordo che rimasi colpita dalle vecchie macchine fotografiche, dai dagherrotipi e dalle fotografie esposte, per me era come un viaggio nel tempo.  Mio nonno mi prestò anche la sua vecchia macchina quando avevo 10 o 12 anni, (una Kodak Retina che ho ancora). Iniziai ad usarla come se fossi una spia, fotografando i vicini di nascosto. Solo quando mi trasferii a NY iniziai a prendere la fotografia sul serio. Ho sempre creduto che bisogna seguire i propri sogni. Così chiusi con il mio lavoro per seguire la mai passione per la fotografia.

- Com’è nata l’idea ddel progetto the pool?

La parte principale del mio lavoro si focalizza sulla nozione di spazio, di tempo, di memoria e la relazione che intratteniamo con l’ambiente nel quale viviamo. Da quando ero bambina ho sempre amato l’acqua, ho iniziato a lavorare a questo progetto nel 2002 quando ero in vacanza a Barcellona. Andai alla piscine publica di Barcelonetta e da lì decisi di portare avanti il progetto fotografando piscine pubbliche in Europa. Attraverso il viaggio in posti di vacanza famigliari e sconosciuti ho riesplorato l’esperienza della mia infanzia, racchiudendo l’esperienza giocosa e sensuale che le persone hanno con l’acqua e il caldo e l’allegria che generano questi momenti. Dietro la mia memoria personale ne esiste anche una collettiva che cerco di svelare attraverso l’esperienza commune del divertimento e del bagno. Le piscine sono interessanti per me perchè rappresentano un simbolo della nostra cultura. In oltre mixano l’elemento naturale dell’acqua con  elementi culturali e sociali degli spazi creati dall’uomo dove sembra che le persone possano scappare dalla vita quotidiana. Nonostante le attività e le espressioni di bagnanti sembrano spontanee, le scene appaiono create da un fotografo quando I momenti sono isolati e congelati nello scatto della macchina.

- Quali sono le tue principali fonti d’ispirazione?

Trovo ispirazione nella vita quotidiana, nei momenti semplici, nelle persone che incontro, nella musica, nell’arte, nella pittura. Mi accorgo di usare la macchina fotografica come un pennello, per esplorare ciò che ci circonda in modo nuovo e sorprendente che mira a suscitare delle domande nello spettatore. Penso che le mie foto spesso hanno un che di surreale.

- Qual’è il lavoro a cui sei più affezionata e perchè?

È una domanda difficile a cui rispondere, perchè sento che ogni lavoro è parte di me. E ci sono ancora dei progetti a cui sono molto affezionata che non ho ancora mostrato al pubblico. La serie the Pool è sicuramente una parte molto importante del mio lavoro, perchè ho viaggiato molto per portarla a termine e per molti anni. ho iniziato una nuova serie sulle piscine chiamata “Poolscapes” fotografate a Los Angeles. Stavolta il focus è sulle piscine private, ma sono meno interessata alle attività sociali e mondane di questo ambiente. La superficie dell’acqua diventa una metafora, uno specchio per svelare cosa c’è dietro lo scatto. Il soggetto principale, svelato tramite I riflessi crea una fugace e sognante  ercezione. É anche la prima volta che faccio un progetto negli Stati Uniti che sono la mia casa da 13 anni. Maleonn - Chinese artist interview

I wish you all a good week end!!!

- Can you tell us something about yourself? When did you discover your passion for photography?

M: My name is Ma Liang, my artist name is maleonn, was born and grown up here in Shanghai, China. I'm 38 years old. I started my photograph-based creation in 2004. Before that, I was engaged in director and art director of advertisement video works. While even before that, I was learning painting and graphic design from middle school to college. I had spent 11 years to learn to be a painter, and dreamt to be an artist. I was born in an art family. Both of my parents are artists. So it's naturally for me to work on artworks. And I've never been doubted whether I would be an artist. After graduation, I went to work in the advertisement film field because of loving films, and hoped to be closer to the films. 9 years later I found that couldn't be realized. There's nothing related between commercial film and movie. What I had done has nothing to do with my dream of art. Then I quit my previous job, started to work as an independent creator.

- How do you create your works?

M: Once I always brought a little notebook with me, and wrote down the weird ideas anytime. Sometimes it was an image, sometimes just a short poem. Later I use my mobile to do that. The inspiration is just a matter of instant. Recording is important to me. After a while I would look into those stuffs I've written down, and found my next theme to work on. Therefore to complete those odds, I started drawing some drafts, did the research on the books and movies, until everything was clear enough in my mind. Afterwards it's looking for the suitable scene according the draft drawing in the memory or in reality. I contacted my friends in my life, persuaded them to be my roles in my works, asked them to come over to my studio, did the costume fitting and makeup. Sometime it needed to have special costume. I made all kinds of props for shooting by myself. All those things are my favorite works. Shooting is simple sometimes. The most exciting moment for me was before shooting, because after large amount of preparations, the image became clearer and more accurate, this really made me happy.

- What are your main sources of inspirations?

M: Mostly from readings. I love reading, and also like to look into other’s blogs on the internet right now, just like peep at other person’s life, very interesting. Film is also the good idea for me. I will immerse in sort of sensitive mood for quite a long time by some excellent films.

- What is the work that you are more attached? Why?

M: No one and everyone, all my works are my baby, I can not pick up which one is my most attached.

- Puoi raccontarci qualcosa su di te? Quando hai scoperto il tuo interesse nei confronti della fotografia?

M: Mi chiamo Ma Liang, il mio pseudonimo è Maleonn, e sono nato e cresciuto qui a Shanghai, in Cina. Ho trentotto anni. Ho iniziato le mie creazioni fotografiche nel 2004. Prima lavoravo come direttore artistico per i video pubblicitari. Prima, durante il liceo è l’università ho studiato grafica e disegno. Ci sono voluti 11 anni per imparare a dipingere, già allora sognavo di diventare un artista. Sono nato in una famiglia d’arte. Entrambi i miei genitori sono artisti. Quindi per me è stato naturale prendere questa strada, non ho mai avuto dubbi su quello che avrei voluto fare da grande. Dopo l’università sono andato a fare il video maker per gli spot pubblicitari perché amo il cinema e speravo così di poter rimanere vicino a quell’ambiente. 9 anni dopo ho scoperto che ciò non poteva avvenire perchè non c’è nulla di collegato tra i film e gli spot pubblicitari. Quello che avevo fatto fino ad allora non centrava nulla con il mio sogno iniziale di fare l’artista. Così ho deciso di chiudere con il mio precedente lavoro e ho iniziato a lavorare come creatore indipendente.

- Come crei I tuoi lavori?

M: Prima, portavo sempre con me un piccolo notes e ci riportavo sopra le strane idee che mi venivano in mente. Alcune volte era un’ immagine altre una poesia. Adesso lo faccio con il cellulare. L’ispirazione è un problema di istante, per questo è importante registrarla subito. Dopo un po’ guardo tra le cose che ho scritto e trovo il mio nuovo tema di lavoro. Poi inizio a disegnare degli schizzi e continuo la mia ricerca su libri e film fino a quando non è tutto chiaro nella mia testa. Dopo di che scelgo la scena più adatta tra i miei schizzi. A quel punto contatto i miei amici e cerco di convincerli ad aiutarmi con i costumi e il trucco. Faccio tutti i preparativi per poter poi scattare io stesso, e sono queste le cose che mi piacciono del mio lavoro. Il momento che preferisco è prima di scattare, quando finalmente l’immagine che avevo in mente prende vita lì davanti a me. Mi rende veramente felice.

- Quali sono le tue principali fonti d’ispirazione?

M: Per lo più dalle letture che faccio. Amo leggere e anche curiosare tra i blog che trovo su internet, è come sbirciare nella vita di altre persone. Molto interessante. I film sono un’altra ottima fonte d’ispirazione. Con un buon film riesco ad immergermi in una sorta di stato d’animo più sensibile.

-Qual’è il lavoro a cui sei più affezionato e perchè?

M: tutti e nessuno. Le mie opera sono come bambini per me, e non posso scegliere.

Andrea Galvani - Minimal and surrealist

Today I’ll present one of the Italy’s most promising young artists.

Andrea Galvani is an Italian photographer, born in Verona in 1973. Today, he lives and works in New York City. He is fascinated by science and it’s models of representation. As well as in the multiplicity of languages, signs, and in their relationship in history; in tables and graphics as synthesis of philosophical, political, and economic concepts. Andrea has a predilection for the photographic medium, but avails often to other mediums, most of all video, drawing and wall painting. His work is very minimal and surreal. Most works feature a single subject or group of like subjects: some feature people and many features animals such as horses, rabbits and other wildlife. One of the other major subjects in Galvani’s work is balloons, usually floating through space or grouped together and attached to horses in other shots.

Oggi, vi propongo uno degli artisti italiani più promettenti del momento.

Andrea Galvani è un fotografo italiano, nato a Verona nel 1973. Oggi, vive e lavora a New York. Andrea è attratto dalle scienze e dai modelli di rappresentazione, come anche dalla molteplicità dei linguaggi, dei segni e la loro relazione con la storia e dalle tabelle e dai grafici come sintesi di concetti filosofici, politici ed economici. Questo artista lavora soprattutto con la macchina fotografica, ma utilizza anche spesso video, disegni e dipinti. I suoi lavori sono minimalisti e surrealisti. Di solito le fotografie comprendono un unico soggetto o gruppi di soggetti identici: a volte persone e a volte animali come: cavalli o conigli. Oleksandr Hnatenko - Surreal moment in photography

Maybe you know him from Deviant Art as “gnato”, but his real name is Oleksandr Hnatenko, that’s why OH! Photography. Oleksandr was born in Zolochiv, Ukraine, in August 27th 1986. Now, he lives and works in Vienna, Austria. 
 Getting his first camera at the age of 8 he tried to take photos at his uncle’s wedding. After taking the pictures he realised that there was no film in the camera. That’s his first approach with photography. 
 After years, He tried taking pictures again. Oleksandr, through his photography is looking for reality, but do this in his own way. Lots of things come across during his search, some are simple, some old, some new, some that are eye-catching, in colour or in monochrome, visible things and some hidden from view, some things with sense and some without.
 Surreal moments are born out of this. They exist in the imagination of Oleksandr Hnatenko and they take form in his photos.

Forse lo conoscete da Deviant Art come “gnato”, ma il suo vero nome è Oleksandr Hnatenko, da qui il nome OH! Photography. Oleksandr nasce a Zolochiv, in Ucraina, il 27 agosto del 1986. Oggi lavora e vive a Vienna. Ebbe la sua prima macchina fotografica all’età di otto anni e cercò di scattare foto al matrimonio dello zio, ma alla fine della cerimonia si accorse di non aver messo il rullino nella macchina fotografica. Oleksandr, attraverso la fotografia, guarda la realtà, ma lo fa a modo suo. Durante la sua ricerca ha incontrato molte cose, alcune semplici, altre vecchie, altre nuove, altre che attirano l’attenzione per I colori, cose visibili e cose nascoste. Da ciò sono nati momenti surreali che esistono prima nell’immaginazione dell’artistta e che prendono forma nelle sue opere.

Tim Bavington - Music and vertical bands

Hi, today’s artist attracts my attention because in his paintings he strickly link the visual result with music. Tim Bavington was born in England in 1966, but he lives in Las Vegas, where he moved to finish his studies.

Music is the main inspiration of Tim Bavington's paintings. Through aerosol paint, Bavington acts as a translator between the aural and the visual as he transforms guitar solos, melodies and bass lines into vertical bands of color. Tracks from bands such as The Darkness, Oasis and The Rolling Stones become vibrant bands of color. Although Bavington has a method that designates sound to color and composition, the paintings are not literal translations; they remain open to intuition and decision-making, allowing for a distinct artistic presence.

Ciao! L’artista di oggi ha attirato la mia attenzione perchè nelle sue opere ha unito in modo molto stretto la musica con il risultato finale. Tim Bavington nato in Inghileterra nel 1966, oggi vive a Las Vegas, dove si è spostato per completare I suoi studi.

La musica è la principale fonte d’ispirazione dei dipinti di Tim Bavington. Con l’aiuto di bombolette spray, Bavington si muove come un traduttore tra le melodie e i suoi dipinti, trasformando assoli di ghitarra, melodie e linee di basso, in bande verticali di colori. Pezzi dei The Darkness, Oasis e The Rolling Stones sono diventate vibranti striscie colorate. Sebbene Bavington ha un metodo per cui trasforma i suoni in dipinti, le su opere non sono traduzioni letterali, ma rimangono aperti all’intuizione lasciando spazio alla presenza artistica di Bavington.

Stéphane Pellennec - Photography and dream

Hi everyone! Today I have an interview with an other Finish artist! Enjoy it!

- Can you tell us something about yourself? When did you discover your passion for Photography?

I'm a dreamer and as a child I was the kind of guy at school you could call a dreamer, the one in his own world, drawing small signs on paper while the teacher explained important things, dreaming looking at the wind moving the branches behind the classroom window... and this until I got to military service. I met there a photographer who was so passioned, he gave me interest in photography, not only as a viewer but also as the one taking the picture. Before I've had some pocket camera and wasn't satisfied about results and could think about photography as a way to express my mind as drawing was, but this man has shown me that with a manual reflex camera, everything is possible. So I asked for a cheap manual reflex camera in 1996 for Christmas. We weren't yet in the digital age and I've learned a lot, read, tried... and my passion did grow up all the time, and it still grows up, I'm still learning and trying, going from analog to digital, from digital to medium format analog, learning to develop negatives...

- What are your main sources of inspirations?

I feel inspired when I feel good and relax and it happens when it is peaceful around and often in the nature. I love to walk on shores, to observe relations between elements, between humans and elements, nature and elements, human and nature... Water is very important.

- What do you want to transmit to people with your works ?

Most of the time I don't make works to transmit things to people, I make works just as I would draw my mind on a piece of paper, for myself, for trying to put my mind, my dreams, on black on white, to get back to myself and dreamy world.

- What is the work that you are more attached? Why?

Strangely the work I'm the most attached to isn't the most typical from me, but there are so many feelings behind this one, how I felt during the moment I took it and what beginning it meant for me and my love, which make this one to be the one, if I need to choose one:

- Può raccontarci qualcosa sulla sua vita? Quando ha scoperto la sua passione per la fotografia?

Io sono un sognatore e quando ero un bambino a scuola ero quell tipo di ragazzo che si può chiamare sognatore. La persona che si mette a tracciare segni sulla carta mentre l’insgnante spiega cose importanti, quella che sogna guardando il vento muovere i rami dietro la finestra.. e così fino al servizio militare, dove incontrai un fotografo che era così appassionato da trasmettermi il suo interesse nella fotografia, non solo come spettatore, ma come colui che sta dietro all’obiettivo. Prima di allora avevo una macchina fotografica compatta, non ero soddisfatto dei risultati, ma non pensavo alla fotografia come modo per esprimere me stesso. Ma quell’uomo ma ha fatto capire che con una reflex manuale ogni cosa è possibile. Così nel Natale del 1996 chiesi in regalo una reflex manuale da pochi soldi. Non era ancora arrivata l’era digitale. Da allora ho imparato molto, leggendo e provando, e ancora oggi continuo ad imparare e la mia passione aumenta di giorno in giorno. Provo a cambiare da analogico a digitale e viceversa, imparo a sviluppare negativi …

- Quali sono le sue principali fonti d’ispirazione?

Mi sento ispirato quando sto bene e sono rilassato, e questo succede quando attorno a me c’è pace e spesso anche natura e verde. Amo camminare sulla spiaggia, osservare relazioni tra gli elementi, tra esseri umani ed elementi, tra la natura e gli elementi, tra la natura e gli esseri umani.. l’acqua è importante.

- Cosa vuole trasmettere alle persone con I suoi lavori?
Di solito non eseguo I miei lavori per trasmettere qualcosa alle persone. Fotografo allo stesso modo di come disegnerei la mia mente su un pezzo di carta, per me stesso, per cercare di rappresentare la mia mente, I miei sogni in bianco e nero. Per ritorvare me stesso e il mio mondo di sogni.

-Qual’è il lavoro a cui sei più affezionato? Perché?

Stranamente il lavoro a cui sono più affezionato non rappresenta il mio lavoro tipico. Ma racchiude così tante emozioni. Come mi sono sentito in quella circostanza e cosa ha significato quel momento per me.
