Jorma Puranen - Icy Project

Jorma Puranen is one of the best known photographers of the Finish contemporary art scene. He was born in Finland in 1951. Now, He lives and works in Helsinki.

The photographs published here belonged to the series “Icy Projects”. They are realized using a wooden board covered with black acrylic to create a glossy surface. Using this panel he travels the desolates areas of Scandinavia setting the panel down and photographing what it reflects of the surrounding environment in its surface. The result is these photographs are more like painting than photographs.

The author said that these series remind him the image of daguerreotype. He didn’t aspect that a black mirror could in such way reflect colours and lines, giving back this result. He started this project to move on from the cliché of commercial nature photography of landscape.

For Jorma Puranen photography is never the mere reflection of what is “out there”, and so he used reflections of landscape also to challenge the photographic image as an objective record.

Le fotografie pubblicate qui appartengono alla serie “Icy Projects”. Per ottenere questo effetto particolare l'artista utilizza una tavola di legno ricoperta di acrilico nero che ne rende la superficie molto lucida. Con questa tavola se ne va in giro per le lande desolate della Finlandia, posa il pannello e fotografa ciò che la superficie riflette. Il risultato è che le fotografie assomigliano molto di più a dei dipinti che a delle fotografie.

L’autore ha affermato che gli ricordano i dagherrotipi. Non si sarebbe mai aspettato che uno specchio nero potesse riflettere in un simile modo colori e linee, restituendo un tale risultato. L’idea del progetto è nata perché voleva scostarsi dal cliché della fotografia commerciale di paesaggi.

Per Jorma Puranen la fotografia non è mai semplice riflesso di quello che c’è “fuori”, per questo ha fotografato i riflessi dei paesaggi, per mettere in discussione l’immagine fotografica come registrazione oggettiva.
