Ruth van Beek - Collage and surrealist effect

Hi everyone! Today artisti is Ruth van Beek, born in 1977 graduated in 2002 at Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam following a Master in Photography. Nowadays she lives and works in Koog aan de Zaan. Ruth collects random snapshots, passport photos, slides and albums and cuts pictures from newspapers and old books. By folding, cutting and combining the material she gives the images a new meaning, creating a hybrid which intertwines photography and drawing. In reconstructions she offers a whole range of images in which dancers fight, double portraits overlap, faces disappear, flowers morph into space-ships and wrecks are transformed into carcasses of extinct machines.

Ciao a tutti! L’artista di oggi è Ruth van Beek, nata nel 1977 e laureata alla Gerrit Rietveld Academy ad Amsterdam dove ha seguito un Master in fotografia. Oggi, vive e lavora a Koog aan de Zaan. Ruth raccoglie scatti, foto di passaporti, slides, album, ritaglia le immagini dai giornali e da vecchi libri. Poi le piega, le taglia e le combuna assieme, dando così all’immagine un nuovo significato, creando un ibrido tra un dipinto e una foto. Nelle sue ricostruzioni si possono così trovare due ballerina che combattono, due ritratti sovrapposti, facce che scompaiono, fiori trasformati in navicelle spaziali e relitti in carcasse di machine estinte.

Maleonn - Chinese artist interview

- Can you tell us something about yourself? When did you discover your passion for photography?

M: My name is Ma Liang, my artist name is maleonn, was born and grown up here in Shanghai, China. I'm 38 years old. I started my photograph-based creation in 2004. Before that, I was engaged in director and art director of advertisement video works. While even before that, I was learning painting and graphic design from middle school to college. I had spent 11 years to learn to be a painter, and dreamt to be an artist. I was born in an art family. Both of my parents are artists. So it's naturally for me to work on artworks. And I've never been doubted whether I would be an artist. After graduation, I went to work in the advertisement film field because of loving films, and hoped to be closer to the films. 9 years later I found that couldn't be realized. There's nothing related between commercial film and movie. What I had done has nothing to do with my dream of art. Then I quit my previous job, started to work as an independent creator.

- How do you create your works?

M: Once I always brought a little notebook with me, and wrote down the weird ideas anytime. Sometimes it was an image, sometimes just a short poem. Later I use my mobile to do that. The inspiration is just a matter of instant. Recording is important to me. After a while I would look into those stuffs I've written down, and found my next theme to work on. Therefore to complete those odds, I started drawing some drafts, did the research on the books and movies, until everything was clear enough in my mind. Afterwards it's looking for the suitable scene according the draft drawing in the memory or in reality. I contacted my friends in my life, persuaded them to be my roles in my works, asked them to come over to my studio, did the costume fitting and makeup. Sometime it needed to have special costume. I made all kinds of props for shooting by myself. All those things are my favorite works. Shooting is simple sometimes. The most exciting moment for me was before shooting, because after large amount of preparations, the image became clearer and more accurate, this really made me happy.

- What are your main sources of inspirations?

M: Mostly from readings. I love reading, and also like to look into other’s blogs on the internet right now, just like peep at other person’s life, very interesting. Film is also the good idea for me. I will immerse in sort of sensitive mood for quite a long time by some excellent films.

- What is the work that you are more attached? Why?

M: No one and everyone, all my works are my baby, I can not pick up which one is my most attached.

- Puoi raccontarci qualcosa su di te? Quando hai scoperto il tuo interesse nei confronti della fotografia?

M: Mi chiamo Ma Liang, il mio pseudonimo è Maleonn, e sono nato e cresciuto qui a Shanghai, in Cina. Ho trentotto anni. Ho iniziato le mie creazioni fotografiche nel 2004. Prima lavoravo come direttore artistico per i video pubblicitari. Prima, durante il liceo è l’università ho studiato grafica e disegno. Ci sono voluti 11 anni per imparare a dipingere, già allora sognavo di diventare un artista. Sono nato in una famiglia d’arte. Entrambi i miei genitori sono artisti. Quindi per me è stato naturale prendere questa strada, non ho mai avuto dubbi su quello che avrei voluto fare da grande. Dopo l’università sono andato a fare il video maker per gli spot pubblicitari perché amo il cinema e speravo così di poter rimanere vicino a quell’ambiente. 9 anni dopo ho scoperto che ciò non poteva avvenire perchè non c’è nulla di collegato tra i film e gli spot pubblicitari. Quello che avevo fatto fino ad allora non centrava nulla con il mio sogno iniziale di fare l’artista. Così ho deciso di chiudere con il mio precedente lavoro e ho iniziato a lavorare come creatore indipendente.

- Come crei I tuoi lavori?

M: Prima, portavo sempre con me un piccolo notes e ci riportavo sopra le strane idee che mi venivano in mente. Alcune volte era un’ immagine altre una poesia. Adesso lo faccio con il cellulare. L’ispirazione è un problema di istante, per questo è importante registrarla subito. Dopo un po’ guardo tra le cose che ho scritto e trovo il mio nuovo tema di lavoro. Poi inizio a disegnare degli schizzi e continuo la mia ricerca su libri e film fino a quando non è tutto chiaro nella mia testa. Dopo di che scelgo la scena più adatta tra i miei schizzi. A quel punto contatto i miei amici e cerco di convincerli ad aiutarmi con i costumi e il trucco. Faccio tutti i preparativi per poter poi scattare io stesso, e sono queste le cose che mi piacciono del mio lavoro. Il momento che preferisco è prima di scattare, quando finalmente l’immagine che avevo in mente prende vita lì davanti a me. Mi rende veramente felice.

- Quali sono le tue principali fonti d’ispirazione?

M: Per lo più dalle letture che faccio. Amo leggere e anche curiosare tra i blog che trovo su internet, è come sbirciare nella vita di altre persone. Molto interessante. I film sono un’altra ottima fonte d’ispirazione. Con un buon film riesco ad immergermi in una sorta di stato d’animo più sensibile.

-Qual’è il lavoro a cui sei più affezionato e perchè?

M: tutti e nessuno. Le mie opera sono come bambini per me, e non posso scegliere.

Andrea Galvani - Minimal and surrealist

Today I’ll present one of the Italy’s most promising young artists.

Andrea Galvani is an Italian photographer, born in Verona in 1973. Today, he lives and works in New York City. He is fascinated by science and it’s models of representation. As well as in the multiplicity of languages, signs, and in their relationship in history; in tables and graphics as synthesis of philosophical, political, and economic concepts. Andrea has a predilection for the photographic medium, but avails often to other mediums, most of all video, drawing and wall painting. His work is very minimal and surreal. Most works feature a single subject or group of like subjects: some feature people and many features animals such as horses, rabbits and other wildlife. One of the other major subjects in Galvani’s work is balloons, usually floating through space or grouped together and attached to horses in other shots.

Andrea Galvani è un fotografo italiano, nato a Verona nel 1973. Oggi, vive e lavora a New York. Andrea è attratto dalle scienze e dai modelli di rappresentazione, come anche dalla molteplicità dei linguaggi, dei segni e la loro relazione con la storia e dalle tabelle e dai grafici come sintesi di concetti filosofici, politici ed economici. Questo artista lavora soprattutto con la macchina fotografica, ma utilizza anche spesso video, disegni e dipinti. I suoi lavori sono minimalisti e surrealisti. Di solito le fotografie comprendono un unico soggetto o gruppi di soggetti identici: a volte persone e a volte animali come: cavalli o conigli. Degli elementi ricorrenti nel lavori di Andrea Galvani sono i palloncini, o lasciati galleggiare nello spazio o raggruppati e attaccati al soggetto fotografico.
